CD-Key Algorithms for Software?

Alright, through just sitting and staring at my computer screen, I came across the question: Are there algorithms behind cd-keys? I'm not saying im trying to do anything illegal, Im just wondering if there is algorithms behind cd-keys and how are they roughly formed, and if so, is it technically possible to use the parent equation of the cdkey to obtain unlimited amounts of cd-key's for that program? thanks
